Syllabus
Get to know the workshop, go over safety guidelines and proper work habits, and experience gathering molten glass from the 1,200°C furnace!
Get ready—it’s going to be hot!
We will explore the nature of glass, its flow and movement, and how to work with it effectively.
Gathering molten glass onto a blowpipe (hollow pipe) correctly and beginning the blowing process.
Gathering glass onto a punty and transferring a bubble from one punty to another.
In this lesson, we will practice glassblowing by creating our first vessel – a drinking glass.
We will also explore color application techniques using frit (colored glass powder).
In this lesson, we will create a blown glass vase using two separate gathers of glass to build thickness and shape.
We will incorporate color application techniques such as:
🎨 Fritting – using powdered colored glass for unique patterns.
🎨 Lip Wrap – adding a contrasting color to the rim of the vase for a refined finish.
This session will refine your control over glassblowing techniques, helping you craft a well-balanced and artistic vessel.
“Bit” Technique – Adding colored glass in a precise and pre-planned manner.
Blown glass piece of your choice.
In this session, we will focus on creating a blown glass plate or bowl, refining control over shape, symmetry, and thickness.
🔹 Blowing & Expanding Techniques – Shaping a wide, balanced form.
🔹 Color Technique Using “Rod” – Applying concentrated color for a more uniform finish.
🔹 Incorporating Bits – Using the bit technique from the previous lesson to add decorative or functional elements.
This session builds on previous skills, allowing for more complex and personalized glass creations.
You’ll experiment with working solid glass (not blown).
We will stretch canes – colored glass rods – which will be used for decorative color techniques in the next lesson.
Blowing a Pitcher and Glass Set
In this session, you will blow a matching set of a pitcher and a drinking glass, focusing on proportion and harmony between the pieces.
We’ll also incorporate a color technique using canes (stretched colored glass rods) to add intricate, decorative patterns to your work.
Practice and Review of Previous Lessons
This session is dedicated to reinforcing the techniques you’ve learned so far.
You’ll have the opportunity to repeat projects from earlier lessons, refine your skills, and gain more confidence in glassblowing through hands-on practice.
Mold Blowing (Plaster / Wood / Metal)
In this lesson, we will explore blowing glass into various types of molds – including plaster, wood, and metal – to create defined shapes and textures.
You’ll learn how different materials affect the final result and practice controlling temperature and timing for safe and effective mold use.
In this lesson, you will design and blow a glass light fixture, focusing on form, function, and aesthetics.
We’ll explore how to shape the glass to diffuse light beautifully and how to prepare it for mounting as a pendant or other type of lighting element.
